What a window and door specialist does for you

Window and door specialists measure the openings, supply made-to-measure windows and doors and install them properly. This includes removing the old units, sealing the joint between frame and masonry and, if you wish, fitting new sills inside and outside.

Many companies also offer front doors, internal doors, roller shutters, external blinds and insect screens. They adjust sticking casements, replace seals and panes, and retrofit existing windows and doors with burglar-resistant hardware.

How to prepare your request

Count the windows and doors involved and note their approximate size. It also helps to know the frame material you want, the type of glazing and whether roller shutters are already there or should be added.

Photos from inside and outside show the company the condition of the frames and joints, and you can send them when you first get in touch. If the outside walls are to be insulated at the same time, mention this straight away, because the new windows are then often set further out in the wall.

Comparing quotes properly

Make sure all quotes describe the same thing: material, profile, glazing, colour, opening type and hardware. Also check whether removal, disposal, window sills and plastering the reveals are included, as quotes often differ here.

Ask how the joints between frame and wall will be sealed inside and outside, because this determines whether there will be draughts or damp later on. In Germany, windows are usually fitted by joiners, glaziers or metalworkers, all of them regulated trades that require registration in the trades register (Handwerksrolle). Wherever you are, ask for proof of qualification and references if in doubt.

Questions and answers

Windows & Doors: frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for new windows?

Usually not for replacing windows with the same size and a similar look. For listed buildings, in areas with design rules or if openings are enlarged, a permit may be required. In a flat, you often need the consent of the owners' association.

Can I have just the glass pane replaced?

Yes, if the frame and hardware are still in good condition. A double-glazed unit that mists up between the panes or has a crack can usually be replaced on its own. The company measures the pane and fits the new one into the existing casement.

Do I need to ventilate differently after replacing my windows?

New windows seal much more tightly than old ones, so moisture from cooking, showering and breathing tends to stay in the room. Open the windows wide for a few minutes several times a day. For larger renovations, specialists often plan a ventilation solution as well, so ask the company about it.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a window and door specialist and which one.
