In Germany, the medical and psychological assessment (MPU, Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung) is ordered by the driving licence authority when there are doubts about a person's fitness to drive, for example after driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, many penalty points or criminal offences on the road. It consists of a medical part, performance tests and an interview with a psychologist.
MPU advisers and traffic psychologists explain the process, help you work through the causes and prepare you for the interview. Depending on the reason, this can also include planning proof of abstinence. The MPU concerns German driving licences. In Austria and Switzerland the procedures have different names; advisers can help you prepare there too.
Have to hand what you have received from the authority: the letter ordering the MPU, any earlier assessment report and documents on proof of abstinence already under way. This lets the adviser assess your case quickly.
Consider whether you would prefer to be advised in person or by video, and in which language. Your details are only passed on to the advice providers who receive your request.
Reputable providers explain what qualifications their advisers have, for example training in traffic psychology, and how many sessions they plan for your reason. Ask for the costs per session or as a package.
Be wary of guarantees: only the assessment centre decides on the result. Good advisers do not promise that you will pass; they prepare you thoroughly and honestly.
