What a car dealer does for you

Car dealers sell new and used cars, buy your current car or take it in part exchange, and arrange leasing and finance. If you wish, they also take care of registration, handover and accessories such as a tow bar or winter wheels.

In their own workshops, dealers carry out servicing and repairs, fix accident damage and look after the roadworthiness test, as well as changing and storing tyres. Franchised dealers know their brand's models particularly well, while independent dealers often offer cars from several manufacturers.

How to prepare your request

If you are buying, it helps to decide on the type of car, the fuel or drive type and a rough price range beforehand. Note down what matters to you, such as the number of seats, boot space, towing capacity or driver assistance systems, and how many kilometres you drive a year. With leasing, the agreed mileage affects the monthly payment.

If you want to sell your car or part exchange it, have the vehicle documents, service book and invoices to hand and give its age, mileage and any known damage. For the workshop, a short description of what is due or what you have noticed is usually enough.

What to look for when comparing

With leasing and finance, compare the total cost rather than just the monthly payment: the deposit, term, final payment, mileage and any charges when the car is returned all count. Ask for the quotes in writing so that you can compare them side by side at your leisure.

With a used car, a thorough test drive is worthwhile, as is a look at the service book, the invoices and the report from the last roadworthiness test. Ask about the dealer's statutory liability for defects and any additional warranty, and have known faults recorded in the sales contract. If you part exchange a car, make sure the price of the new car and the value of the old one are shown separately.

Questions and answers

Car dealers: frequently asked questions

Can I part exchange my current car when I buy?

Yes, many dealers offer this. The value of your car is then deducted from the purchase price. In the form, choose part exchange under new car or used car and give the model, age and mileage of your car in the description.

What is the difference between leasing and finance?

With leasing, you use the car for an agreed period and then hand it back. With finance, you buy the car and pay for it in instalments; once the last payment is made, it is yours. Which option suits you better depends on how much you drive, your plans and the total cost.

Which documents do I need to sell my car?

Above all the vehicle documents (in Germany, the registration certificate parts I and II), plus all keys, the service book, invoices for repairs and the report from the last roadworthiness test. If there is still finance outstanding, agree with the dealer how it will be paid off.

Can I also request vehicles as a company?

Yes. Choose company in the form and describe how many vehicles you need and what for. Many dealers have dedicated contacts for business customers and fleets and offer business leasing.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a car dealer and which one.

How many car dealers will get in touch?

Up to three from your region that offer exactly this service. Your contact details only go to them.

Can I withdraw my request?

Yes, at any time via the link in your confirmation email. You can also have your contact details deleted there.
