What a landscape gardener does for you

Landscape gardeners maintain gardens and outdoor areas, trim hedges and trees, lay lawns and beds and build paths, driveways, patios, fences and walls. Many businesses also take away green waste, excavated soil and old materials.

For a new garden or a larger redesign, the gardener usually starts with a design and plans groundwork, irrigation and lighting as well. If you don't want to look after the garden yourself, you can arrange regular maintenance for the whole season.

How to prepare your request

Give the approximate size of the garden or area and describe what grows or lies there today. For trees and hedges, height and number help, and for paving, the area and the material you would like.

Access matters too: can a mini digger, plate compactor or chipper reach the area, or does everything have to be carried through a narrow gate or the house? You can send the gardener photos and a simple sketch at first contact.

Comparing quotes properly

Check whether disposal of green waste, excavated soil and old material, travel and machinery are included in the quote. For paving and patios, the sub base should be described, because it determines whether the surface stays level over time.

With regular maintenance, it is worth checking whether you are charged by the hour or at a flat rate and exactly what each visit includes. For larger new gardens, ask for references from your area and for a planting plan.

Questions and answers

Gardening & landscaping: frequently asked questions

Can I have my hedge cut all year round?

In Germany, gentle shaping and maintenance cuts are allowed all year, as long as nesting birds are not disturbed. Hard cutting back and removing hedges is prohibited there from 1 March to 30 September. Austria, Switzerland and Spain have their own rules, which can differ from region to region.

Do I need permission to fell a tree?

That depends on where you live. Many towns and municipalities protect trees above a certain size with their own rules, in which case you need a permit before felling. If in doubt, ask your local authority, and many landscape gardeners know the local requirements.

When is the best time to lay a new lawn?

Spring and late summer are well suited, when the soil is warm and moist enough. Turf can be laid for most of the season, as long as it is not freezing and not too hot and dry. After that, the new lawn mainly needs regular watering.

Can I have the garden designed only?

Yes. Choose the service Garden design and planning and state whether you only want a design or design and build from a single provider. A good plan shows paths, patio, beds, plants, lighting and water and can also be carried out in stages later on.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a landscape gardener and which one.

How many landscape gardeners will get in touch?

Up to three from your region that offer exactly this service. Your contact details only go to them.

Can I withdraw my request?

Yes, at any time via the link in your confirmation email. You can also have your contact details deleted there.
