What jewellers and goldsmiths do for you

Jewellers sell jewellery and watches and help you choose, from an engagement ring to a gift for a milestone birthday. Many have their own workshop or work closely with a goldsmith. That is where wedding rings and one-off pieces are made to your wishes, often first as a drawing or 3D view before the piece is crafted.

Repairs are part of everyday workshop life too: making rings larger or smaller, soldering chains, resetting loose stones, replating white gold with rhodium and turning inherited jewellery into a new piece. Jewellers with their own watchmaker replace batteries, test water resistance and carry out full services on mechanical watches. Many also provide appraisals and valuations for insurance, inheritance or a sale.

How to prepare your request

For wedding rings and one-off pieces, it helps to have a rough idea of material and shape, a budget range and a fixed date, if there is one. Pictures of pieces you like are a good starting point for the first conversation. The jeweller will measure your ring size accurately. If you want to keep it a surprise, bring along a ring that fits well on the same finger.

For a repair or a valuation, it is best to say how many pieces are involved, what they are made of and exactly what needs doing. A hallmark such as 585, 750 or 925 inside the ring or on the clasp gives a first indication of the material. For watches, it helps to say whether it runs on a battery or has a mechanical movement.

What to look out for when comparing

With jewellery, it pays to look closely at the details in the quote: the fineness of the metal, for example 585 or 750 for gold, plus the weight and the type and size of the stones. For larger diamonds, a certificate from an independent gemmological laboratory is usual, recording the carat weight, colour, clarity and cut.

For repairs and watch servicing, the quote should state which work is included, which parts will be replaced and how long it will take. Ask whether the work comes with a guarantee, and for valuable pieces ask for a receipt with a precise description when you hand them in.

With a valuation, it depends on the purpose. For insurance, the replacement value is usually determined, meaning what a comparable piece would cost new. When selling, what counts is what a dealer will pay for it today, and that is usually less.

Questions and answers

Jewellers & Goldsmiths: frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether my jewellery is gold or silver?

A first indication is the hallmark showing the fineness, often inside the ring or on the clasp: 333, 585 and 750 stand for gold, 925 for sterling silver and 950 often for platinum. Older or remodelled pieces sometimes have no hallmark. A jeweller can reliably test the material with a touchstone test or a measuring device.

How do I find out the ring size if the ring is meant to be a surprise?

The easiest way is to take along a ring the person wears on the same finger and have the jeweller measure it. Many rings can be made slightly larger or smaller later on. With rings set with stones all the way round, this is often only possible to a limited extent, so it is worth knowing the exact size beforehand.

What is the difference between fine jewellery and costume jewellery?

Fine jewellery is made of precious metal such as gold, silver or platinum, often with genuine gemstones or pearls. Costume jewellery is usually made of base metals, sometimes gold or silver plated. It can often only be repaired to a limited extent, because the heat of soldering can damage the plating. A jeweller will tell you beforehand whether a repair is worthwhile.

When does a watch need a service?

Mechanical watches, meaning automatic and hand-wound watches, need a full service every few years: the movement is taken apart, cleaned, oiled and readjusted. Another reason is if the watch runs noticeably fast or slow or stops. How often a service makes sense depends on the watch and the manufacturer, and the watchmaker will advise you.
