What a gold buyer does for you

Gold buyers purchase scrap gold, jewellery, coins, bars and dental gold, and many also buy silver, platinum, palladium and quality watches. For scrap gold and dental gold, the material value is what counts: it is based on the weight, the fineness and the current daily price of the precious metal.

With collector coins, designer jewellery and watches, the value can be higher than the pure material value, for example because of rarity, maker or condition. Experienced buyers recognise such pieces and value them separately. With an estate, they can go through everything on request and explain what is suitable for selling.

How to prepare your request

Roughly sort your items by type: jewellery, coins, bars, dental gold, silver and watches. Look for stamped numbers, such as 333, 585 or 750 on gold and 800 or 925 on silver. An approximate weight, for example from kitchen scales, helps the buyer make a first assessment.

Have any documents to hand, such as certificates for bars, the box and papers for watches, or receipts. When you sell, bring valid identification with you: this is standard practice when precious metals are bought.

Comparing offers properly

Good buyers weigh your items in front of you, test the fineness in a way you can follow and explain how their offer is made up. Ask which daily price it is based on, how long the offer is valid and whether there are any charges for testing or postage.

Do not let yourself be pressured, and take your time to compare. A written purchase receipt showing weight, fineness and price per item or per gram makes everything clear. If you send items by post, find out beforehand how the parcel is insured and what happens if you turn down the offer.

Questions and answers

Selling gold: frequently asked questions

How is the price for scrap gold calculated?

The basis is the pure gold content: the weight is set against the fineness, so 585 gold, for example, contains 58.5 per cent fine gold. The buyer values this share at the current daily price and deducts an amount for testing, processing and their own costs. That is why it is worth comparing offers.

Do I need ID to sell gold?

As a rule, yes. Reputable buyers record your personal details when they buy and will ask for a valid identity card or passport. So bring it with you to the appointment.

Do I have to sell if I send a request?

No. The request is without obligation. You receive up to three offers, compare them at your leisure and decide for yourself whether and to whom you sell. You can also turn down an offer after a valuation in the shop.

How is dental gold valued?

Dental gold is usually an alloy of gold and other precious metals such as platinum, palladium or silver. The buyer determines the precious metal content, often by analysis, and values it at the daily prices. Tooth residue and ceramic do not count towards the weight.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a gold buyer and which one.

How many gold buyers will get in touch?

Up to three from your region that offer exactly this service. Your contact details only go to them.

Can I withdraw my request?

Yes, at any time via the link in your confirmation email. You can also have your contact details deleted there.
