What a solar installer does for you

A solar installer designs the system to suit your roof and your consumption, fits the mounting frame and panels and runs the cables to the inverter and meter cabinet. The installer usually also takes care of registration with the grid operator and commissioning.

Many installers also fit battery storage and EV chargers, connect a heat pump or extend existing systems. For maintenance, cleaning and troubleshooting it helps to have a local business that looks after the system in the years after installation.

How to prepare your request

For a first quote the installer mainly needs the roof type, its orientation and your annual electricity consumption, which you will find on your last bill. If you are planning an electric car, a heat pump or a battery, mention it, because it changes the right size for the system.

Photos of the roof, the meter cabinet and the possible space for the inverter and battery help with the first contact. Please also note in the description what the roof is covered with and roughly how old the covering is.

Comparing quotes for a solar system

Compare not only the total price but the individual items: panels, inverter, mounting frame, scaffolding, work on the meter cabinet, registration and, where relevant, battery storage. A good quote names the manufacturers, the output in kWp and the expected annual yield, so you can put the quotes side by side.

Ask about the warranties on panels, inverter and battery, the guarantee on the installation work and reference systems in your area. Depending on the country and region there are funding programmes or payments for power fed into the grid, and the installer will know the current conditions.

Questions and answers

Solar panels: frequently asked questions

Do I need permission for a solar PV system?

For a system on the roof of a house, usually not. For listed buildings, ground mounted systems or special rules set by the local authority, a permit may be required, depending on the country and the location. The installer knows what applies to you and usually takes care of registration with the grid operator.

Is a battery worth it?

That depends on how much electricity you use in the evening and at night and how large the system is. A battery increases the share of solar power you use yourself, and the installer will work this out using your consumption. Many systems can be designed so that a battery can be added later.

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

Roof surfaces facing south, east or west with little shade are well suited, and flat roofs can take panels on tilted frames. The condition of the roof matters: if a renovation is due in the next few years, it often makes sense to do it before installation. The installer checks this during the site survey.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a solar installer and which one.

How many solar installers will get in touch?

Up to three from your region that offer exactly this service. Your contact details only go to them.

Can I withdraw my request?

Yes, at any time via the link in your confirmation email. You can also have your contact details deleted there.
