What a painter and decorator does for you

Painters and decorators paint walls, ceilings and exteriors, hang wallpaper and varnish doors, radiators, staircases or railings. Before painting, they check the surface, fill cracks and holes and cover floors, windows and furniture.

Many companies also create decorative finishes with lime plaster, textured plaster or troweled effects, treat water stains and smaller patches of mould and redecorate stairwells for property managers. For exteriors, they usually also take care of the scaffolding, cleaning and plaster repairs.

How to prepare your request

For a first quote, the company mainly needs the number of rooms, the approximate area, the ceiling height and the condition of the walls. Mention whether old wallpaper needs to be stripped and whether the walls should stay white or be painted in colour.

You can send photos of the rooms or the exterior when you first get in touch, especially if there are cracks, stains or flaking paint. Also make clear whether the rooms will be empty during the work or whether furniture needs to be moved and covered.

Comparing quotes properly

A good quote lists the areas, the number of coats, the paint and preparation work such as filling, priming or stripping wallpaper separately. Check whether covering, materials and disposal are included and whether the work is charged by area or by the hour.

In Germany, painting and decorating is a regulated trade that requires registration in the trades register (Handwerksrolle). Wherever you are, ask for references, which paint will be used and, for exterior work, who provides the scaffolding.

Questions and answers

Painters & Decorators: frequently asked questions

Do I have to have my flat painted when I move out?

That depends on your tenancy agreement, the local rules and the condition of the flat. Not every decorating clause in a tenancy agreement is necessarily valid, so if in doubt have the agreement checked, for example by a tenants' advice service. The painter and decorator can estimate the work involved in advance.

Can a painter and decorator remove mould?

A painter and decorator can treat smaller patches of mould and then paint over them with a suitable paint. It is important to find the cause, such as damp from outside, a cold corner or too little ventilation. If the mould covers a large area, the cause should be investigated by a specialist first.

Do I have to clear the furniture out myself beforehand?

You agree this with the company. Many companies move furniture to the middle of the room and cover it, but that takes working time. If you take down pictures, curtains and small items and empty the shelves beforehand, the work goes faster.

What does the request cost me?

Nothing. The request is free for you and without obligation. You decide for yourself whether to work with a painter and decorator and which one.

How many painters and decorators will get in touch?

Up to three from your region that offer exactly this service. Your contact details only go to them.

Can I withdraw my request?

Yes, at any time via the link in your confirmation email. You can also have your contact details deleted there.
