Nail salons build artificial nails in gel or acrylic, fill them in at regular intervals and remove them gently when you would like a break. During a manicure they care for your hands and natural nails, with nail polish if you like or with gel polish, which hardens under a lamp and lasts longer than ordinary polish.
Many salons also offer a cosmetic pedicure with a foot soak, nail care and polish, nail art from a simple French finish to hand painted designs, and appointments for special occasions such as weddings or school proms. Some will also come to your home, a hotel or an event, for example for a bride and her bridal party or a company party.
Think in advance about the length, shape and colour you would like. One or two example photos quickly show what you have in mind; you can show them to the salon when you first get in touch. At the end of your request, note what you currently have on your nails, such as natural nails, gel polish or a set done at another salon, as this affects how much time the salon plans.
For weddings, parties and groups, it is best to give the date and the number of people. If the salon is to come to you, briefly describe the location, for example a flat, a hotel or a function room. Usually all that is needed is a table, good light and a socket for the lamp.
Pay attention to hygiene: tools should be cleaned and disinfected after every appointment, and single use files are thrown away or given to you to take home. A good salon takes time for a short conversation, looks at your natural nails and explains which material and which length suit your everyday life.
Do not just compare the price of a new set; also check what infills cost and how often they are needed, as these appointments come on top at regular intervals. How long your nails stay looking good also depends on how fast they grow and how you care for them at home. It is best to have artificial nails and gel polish removed at the salon rather than peeling them off, so that your natural nails are protected.

An interval of about three to four weeks is usual. How quickly a visible gap appears at the base of the nail depends on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands in everyday life. After the first few appointments, your salon will tell you which interval suits you.
Gel and acrylic are materials for building nails; they can strengthen and lengthen them. Gel hardens under a lamp, while acrylic is mixed from a powder and a liquid and hardens in the air. Gel polish is a thin layer of colour on the natural nail. It lasts longer than ordinary nail polish but does not lengthen the nail.
Many people have their nails done one to three days before the big day, so they look fresh and nothing has grown out yet. If you are wearing gel or acrylic for the first time or would like a detailed design, a trial appointment a few weeks beforehand is worthwhile. For groups with bridesmaids and family, it is best to ask early.
